Today we're going to show advanced footwork drills to help you with your countering capabilities. These will help position you for counter-strikes, counter-kicks, takedowns, etc.
WARNING - start with Basic Footwork before attempting to use this in sparring. It's better to understand the liabilities of each position before going live.

Step Back and Angle
When we step straight back versus an advancing opponent, we quickly get run over. Remember, they can move forward faster and further than we can move back. Using angles with our step back will instead provide us with the ability to get offline and set up counter positions.
Range Affects Angle
Longer range = smaller angle to hide your line and keep the opponent from following you. When closer in, apply a large angle to get offline and into a counter position. Closer Range = Big Angle.
Shuffle back and Angle
The same angling rules apply as with step back and angle, except now we're working closer in where we are dealing with smaller movements from our aggressor.
Hard and Heavy, The Spin Out
The spin out is an amazing tool to get you out of the way as fast as possible from an oncoming train, and into a position to counter.
Shuffle Forward and Circle
Our first attack movements we learn are generally moving forward on a straight line. As we advance, we can start combining multiple footwork elements together to formulate better attacks. Here we use Shuffle Forward and Circle to advance on our opponents centerline.
Here are a few solo drills we use to practice this footwork on our own. Chalk line on pavement, score a line in the sand at the beach, or lay a line on the front lawn. Any of these visual aids help give us a reference point to make the right movements.
